Case Study – Building Unity Through Innovation using Lego Serious Play

Case Study: Building Unity Through Innovation

Challenge:

A leading sustainability consultancy, formed by the merger of four distinct organizations, faced significant integration challenges. The new entity struggled with strategic integration, aiming to operate as “One Team.” This resulted in governance gaps, unclear decision-making responsibilities, and a poor employee experience, which teams described as “building the plane while flying it.”

Solution:

Strategy Table Pathways was engaged to transform this complexity into clarity. They designed a two-part intervention:

  1. Governance Workshop: A virtual session that implemented the DACI (Driver, Approver, Contributor, Informed) framework to formalize decision-making processes and clarify roles.
  2. Values & Culture Retreat: A hybrid company retreat centered on the Lego® Serious Play® (LSP) methodology. This research-backed, hands-on process enabled 100% participation, allowing team members to build 3D models of their ideas. This approach bypassed conventional barriers, helping teams identify obstacles (like “chaotic revolving doors”) and co-create tangible solutions (like “standardized processes” and “clear boundaries”).

Impact:

The intervention successfully unlocked hidden insights and “ground-truth realities” that previous methods had missed. The LSP methodology fostered psychological safety and genuine dialogue, which, according to the CEO, put the organization on a “strong path towards a truly unified team.” The retreat concluded with a clear, co-created, actionable strategy built around three key imperatives: Build Bridges, Develop Playbooks, and Drive Results.
